Biennial Update

MCS-150

The MCS-150 form needs to be updated periodically to ensure accurate and up-to-date information about the carrier’s operation.

The FMCSA requires carriers to update their MCS-150 information every two years as part of the biennial update process. However, carriers must file an MCS-150 Edit within 30 days of any changes occurring between these biennial updates.

Avoiding Penalties and USDOT Deactivation

t’s essential to promptly report any modifications to uphold compliance standards and avoid potential penalties.

Efficient management of MCS-150 Edit is crucial in maintaining a compliant operation. To streamline compliance and avoid disruptions

Regularly reviewing and updating MCS-150 information beyond the biennial updates is fundamental in maintaining accurate records and avoiding compliance issues. By ensuring prompt filing of MCS-150 Edits and staying proactive in updating information, carriers uphold compliance standards, mitigate risks, and maintain a smooth operational trajectory within the trucking industry.

When to Submit a MCS-150 Edit

An “Edit” encompasses a wide array of changes occurring outside the regular biennial update cycle. These encompass pivotal aspects of your operation:

Driver or Vehicle Changes
Any addition or removal of drivers or vehicles within your fleet mandates filing an Edit within a 30-day window.

Continuous Compliance
if your operation remains unchanged during the biennial update, any subsequent alterations must be reported promptly to maintain compliance

Business Information Update
Timely updates to the FMCSA about changes in business details, such as address, phone number, or name, are crucial and require filing an Edit promptly.

Understanding Biennial Update

This requirement is essential for private, exempt for-hire, and for-hire carriers. This mandated requirement entails an accurate data submission every two years based on the last two digits of your USDOT Number.

The frequency of filing is dictated by the next-to-last digit of your USDOT number: odd-numbered years for odd digits and even-numbered years for even digits. The final digit determines the month of filing: 1 for January, 2 for February, and 0 for October. Ensuring adherence to the biennial MCS-150 filing is crucial, even if your business has encountered no significant operational changes since the last update or if your operations have ceased it is important to file the Biennial Update on time.

Your Biennial Update CAN Be Simple!

Biennial Update (also know as BU or MCS-150 update)

Are you filing the update as mandated?

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires private, exempt for-hire, and forhire motor carriers of passengers or cargo to update their information every two years based on the last two digits of their USDOT Number. Even if your business has had no significant changes in the past, ceased interstate operations since the last update, or is no longer in business, you must file this update.

However, brokers and freight forwarders are NOT required to file the biennial update every two years. If you have any changes, such as a name or address change, you must file a 5889 form.
